Achieve Foundation core aim is to empower people through the use of digital skills and information technology.
However, to do this, we must ensure that we meet people where they are – provide services and assistance that is helpful and tailored, not just services and courses that are easy to deliver.
As part of our efforts into delivering digital literacy in the UK and internationally, Achieve Foundation is researching how that can be delivered in practice. As part of our research, it’s become evident that meeting basic needs is essential to the long-term goal of greater digital skills.
Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology explaining human motivation based on the pursuit of different levels of needs. The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfil their needs in a hierarchical order. This order begins with the most basic needs before moving on to more advanced needs.
Food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter are the key necessities for human survival. For many people, these basic needs cannot be met without the aid of non-profit organisations. Achieve Foundation realise that offering digital skills if individuals do not have food or even access to technology is ill formed and insensitive. In the UK, there are many established organisations which supply this type of assistance for those in need. Rather than competing in this market, we have looked at where our efforts would have a greater impact.
Providing Essential Aid – Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Nigeria
We are currently supplying international aid on a regular basis to a small group in Ogbomosho, a town in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria. By supplying basic food essentials and engaging with the local population Achieve Foundation has a better understanding on how the long-term goal of digital literacy can be delivered successfully in this small town.
International Aid Partnerships
Achieve Foundation are looking for partners to widen this initiative to a formal foodbank which can reach more individuals and families. If you would like to find out about our international aid efforts of or want to support this initiative either as a one off or regular support, please get in touch.
